New Zealand Indie rock veterans the Bats formed in 1983 lead by Robert Scott, former bassist for the Clean, a band that defined the early '80s Flying Nun sound. Retaining the Clean's crisp drumming style (seemingly inherited directly from Mo Tucker) and dry lyrical wit while branching out in a more country influenced direction, the Bats play a hybrid of pure pop and wistful melancholic rock that is echoed in many of today's Indie groups.
