Archie Campbell was an American comedian, writer, actor and singer. Born November 7, 1914 Bulls Gap, TN Died August 29, 1987, Knoxville, TN. He was one of the stars and the head writer of Hee Haw, a country-flavored network television variety show. The short comedic “Pfft! You Was Gone” was a song he sang nearly every show and often more than once.
His musical hits included "The Men in My Little Girl's Life" in 1966 which hit #6 on the U.S. country charts. "Trouble in the Amen Corner" hit #24 on the same chart in 1965 and "The Cockfight" hit #44 in 1967. "Tell It Like It Is", a duet with Lorene Mann, charted to #31 on the country charts in August of 1968. Campbell also recorded several comedy-music albums.
One of Campbell's 'signature' comedy routines was to tell stories in "Spoonerism" form, with the first letters of words in some phrases intentionally switched for comic effect. The best-known was "RinderCella", his re-telling of the fairy tale "Cinderella", about the girl who "slopped her dripper" (dropped her slipper). The recording of "RinderCella" peaked at #132 on the U.S. pop chart in 1965. Campbell also performed a routine generally known as "That's Bad/That's Good". Campbell would state a troublesome occurrence; his partner would... When the partner would say, "Oh that's good!", Campbell would immediately counter with "No, that's bad!" and tell the new result, and so on till the end of the routine. Archie served in the US Navy during World War II.
