Review
From the opening guitar/bass interchange, it's obvious that Starcastle has every Yes sound, riff and nuance down cold. Terry Luttrell's vocals are pure Jon Anderson, high-pitched but not quite as lucid. Gary Strater's bass is a nearly perfect echo of Chris Squire's, Matthew Stewart's guitars a studied Steve Howe, and Herb Schildt's keyboards derived from Rick Wakeman. The tempos, slick time changes and melodic and instrumental riffs of the songs (with titles like "Elliptical Seasons" and "To the Fire Wind") are laboriously patched-together snippets… Read More from every Yes album ever made. In fact, I found Starcastle better than either of the two recent Yes solo albums (by Howe and Squire) or even Tales from Topographic Oceans. There are lots of juicy hooks to sink your gnashes into, and the instrumental work all across the board is of superior quality. It's so good, in fact, that it's obvious these crooks could play anything they had a mind to. If you're a big fan of Yes, you'd actually be doing yourself a disservice by not picking up on Starcastle, too. (RS 212) ALAN NIESTER |
