Miranda was born in Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico, on March 11, 1940. He moved to Texas in the 1960s and lived in San Antonio early in his career. He is being remembered as one of the greats of the 1960s and '70s era for his emotional and sometimes wild outlaw style. He was sometimes billed as “El Minero,” the miner. An early record cover promoted him as “la voz de Mexico en Texas.”
In his early career, Miranda performed with Joey López y Los Guadalupanos and Los Pavos Reales.
