Although they swear they weren't a goth band by any means, Cranes fans often arrived to live shows wearing dark capes, black accessories and adorned with white pancake foundation. With their droning guitars, Joy Division-inspired bass riffs and wistful female singer Alison Shaw, the band's sound was much closer to that of shoegazing acts such as Slowdive or dream pop contemporaries Cocteau Twins.
