An extremely versatile pianist, John Hicks adapts to Traditional Jazz, Hard Bop or Free Jazz situations with equal confidence and dynamism. His harmonically developed improvisations expand and update the jazz tradition from the inside; he frequently adds startling melodic and rhythmic insights to an encyclopedia of references, developing well-traveled melodies and chord changes in fresh and original ways. As a sideman, he's worked with everyone from Art Blakey to Pharaoh Sanders.
