Chicago native Chantay Savage was raised on jazz artists such as Sarah Vaughn, which goes a long way in explaining her sultry, soulful vocal style. After winning a local talent contest, Savage made her name on the local scene as a session musician, arranger, singer, and slowly branched out to songwriting with names such as Ce Ce Peniston. It was her association with Peniston that got her signed to RCA in 1992, resulting in a few modest hits.
