GERRY DIEZ BIO
Born and raised in Southern California, Gerry Diez began his association with doo wop music as a youngster in the 1950’s, hanging out at his neighborhood record store, Pal Records in Canoga Park. At 13, he jumped at the chance to take a part time job at the store after school and on weekends, learning the ins and outs of the retail record business and amassing his own collection of favorite vinyl 45’s. In 1960, Gerry became the youngest manager in the single sales department at the store, a job he kept thoughout high school and into his college years at Pierce College and Valley State College (now Cal State University at Northridge) in the San Fernando Valley. He was a radio disc jockey at KBLA-AM Radio, Los Angeles with his own weekend program, “The Memory Makers Show” featuring an oldies format, and then worked as a buyer for a wholesale record distributor, California One Stop, purchasing inventory of 45 rpm singles for juke box accounts. By the 1970’s Gerry was a family man with two children and began his own business as an independent record dealer and consultant. He also became a contributor to record related publications including the “Lengendary Master Series - Rhythm & Blues Vocal Groups - Volumes I & II” from Liberty/ Imperial Records, where he was an author of the liner notes, and “R & B Magazine”, where he reported on recording artist interviews including Arthur Lee Maye, and DJ Hunter Hancock, among others. Today Gerry is known as a major contributor of record values and historical data to the popular "Jeff Kreiter Vocal Group Guide" and the “Rare Record Report”, a quarterly report on the rare record market. He has also served as the Historian of the Los Angeles based Doo Wop Music Hall Of Fame, dedicated to preserving the vocal group sound. Gerry currently deals in the sale and trade of rare, collectible records - singles and albums from the 50’s thru 80's - doo wop, rhythm & blues, rock ‘n roll, and soul, with collectors throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan.

VG- - Consistent noise with audible clicks and pops, scratches, scuffs
Record Collector's Grading System
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
------------------------------------------------------------
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
------------------------------------------------------------
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
------------------------------------------------------------
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
------------------------------------------------------------
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
------------------------------------------------------------
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
------------------------------------------------------------
BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
------------------------------------------------------------
CDs & CASSETTES: As a general rule, CDs and cassettes either play perfectly - in which case they are in Mint condition - or they don't, in which case their value is minimal. Cassette tape is liable to deteriorate with age, even if it remains unplayed, so care should be taken when buying old tapes. CDs are difficult to grade visually: they can look perfect but actually be faulty, while in other cases they may appear damaged but still play perfectly. Cassette and
CD inlays and booklets should be graded in the same way as record covers and sleeves. In general, the plastic containers for cassettes and CDs can easily be replaced if they are broken or scratched, but card covers and digipaks are subject to the same wear as record sleeves
