I use a dual rating system of media/cover. The following notes explain what you will find in each type of medium for each of the grades. Mint ==== Still sealed and in new condition. CD: Sometimes a case may be cracked even though the original wrapping is all or mostly in place. If this is the case, I will note that in the rating on the cover. Cassette: I'm dealing with music that could be decades old. Even though I have purchased cassettes for my own collection that are mint, when I open them up and play them, the sound quality might have deteriorated. Tapes are subject to heat and cold and just plain age can make them stick together. I can't guarantee that the music on an old cassette will be perfect, but if you are not pleased with the condition, you will be able to receive a full refund. Vinyl: They used to tell me to always unwrap a record because the cellophane would warp the record. In my racks of hundreds of records I didn't worry about that, because they were always under gentle pressure. If there is any warping of the cardboard or any visible imperfections, they will be noted in the cover grading. Cover: No visible blemishes (through the wrapping). No cracks in the plastic or bending/warping in the cardboard. Excellent ========= Like new, but has been opened. CD: No visible blemishes in the playing surface. Cassette: Very clear sound quality. Sounds like it's new. Vinyl: Plays with rare surface noise. Cover: No wear or defacing. No bends or cracks. LP's from my personal collection were unwrapped from the original cellophane and placed in loose plastic sleeves so that they would not wear in the handling/storage. Unfortunately, I don't have extra sleeves to be able to include them when I sell a record, but the covers will be high quality. Very Good ========= CD: May have small scratches in the playing surface, but plays with no imperfections. Cassette: Clear sound quality. Does not sound muffled. Vinyl: May have minor surface noise. Cover: Will only show minor wear. Good ==== CD: May be quite scuffed on the surface, but still plays clearly. Cassette: Will have lower tone quality or may sound slightly muffled. Short imperfections that affect the sound (what we used to call the tape player "chewing up" my tape!) You take it out, smooth it out, rewind it, but man, there's still that one spot where it's garbled. If it affects more than one song, it gets ranked poor, or goes in the trash. Vinyl: Has moderate surface noise. Crackles in the quiet parts or in-between songs. Clicks from scratches, but does not skip on a good turntable. Cover: Some wear, writing or stickers. Older records may be frayed around the edges, but the central artwork is in good shape. Poor ==== CD: Will have CD skips in places. I will try to be specific on what's wrong. Cassette: I rarely will sell a poor cassette because it's not fun to listen to, and is probably not long for this world. It will either be muffled all the way through or have more than one song that is "chewed up." I listed to most of my music on headphones, and I notice all these imperfections. If you don't use headphones, you might pick up a poor cassette for the low price. Vinyl: has significant scratches and may have skips. Cover: Covers show significant wear or are defaced.
