Review
Masks have always made it easier for participants in rock's athletic equivalent of professional wrestling to flit back and forth between good guy and bad guy terrain. It's only fitting, then, that rock's premier masked band should finally seize the opportunity to play dirty -- and that's exactly what they do on this, their seventh longplayer. Supersonic Guitars in 3-D -- yes, 3-D glasses are part of the package -- trades the sunny smiles of earlier releases for teeth-baring snarls, all the better to amp up the impact of Link Wray-flavored… Read More tunes like "Tarantula" and "Time Bomb." Naturally enough, the quartet also manages to sneak some foreign objects into the mix, the most potent of which is the saxophone wielded by X mainstay Billy Zoom. His blowing is at its fiercest and fuzziest on "San Diego Shutdown," a churning blast of beach air that's as dizzying as a good old-fashioned airplane spin. DAVID SPRAGUE
