and "Lately" is a gorgeous slow-burner that would almost sound at home on a Van Morrison record from the early Seventies. Uptempo cuts such as the vaguely countrified "The One I Love" sound stark and a little tentative, as if Gray would rather be left alone with his piano and his daydreams. But on his most affecting cuts, such as the lilting, elegiac title track, Gray works up the kind of gentle melancholia that goes down smooth, but reappears later, in your head.
