Review Atmosphere's slug is a poet of romantic dysfunction, a guy who mercilessly documents messy breakups. This Minneapolis indie-rap hero has star potential to spare, delivering taut, complex rhyme narratives with everyman earnestness. God Loves Ugly, Atmosphere's fourth album, isn't quite the therapy session that the last one, Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EPs, was, but Slug still finds ample time to growl at an old flame (the scabrous "Fuck You Lucy") and warn a new one of the trouble she's about to get herself into (the peppy, bemused "Hair").… Read More Producer Ant knows enough to stay out of the rapper's way, contributing the odd piano flourish and scratched-in sample. Like music's best angry young men, Slug packs just as much self-hatred as bravado. "I sleep next to women that I don't deserve," he says on "Saves the Day." "They like to hurt my pride while I work they nerves." It's as close to emo as hip-hop gets. JON CARAMANIA (RS 903 - August 22, 2002)
