When Charles Mingus left the forward-thinking Red Norvo Trio, he was replaced with the always reliable Mitchell. Like many musicians associated with West Coast Jazz, Red Mitchell excelled at everything from Cool to Hard Bop to the Avant Garde, playing with Andre Previn, Harold Land, Hampton Hawes and Ornette Coleman. As a group leader, Mitchell is just as adventurous.
